The Sustainable Smart Campus as a Living Lab (SSC) Initiative is supported by the University with an allocated funding of $50M. Its goal is to transform our campus into a platform for learning, experimenting, and showcasing new ideas and approaches.
Established in 2019, the SSC Initiative is co-led by the GREAT Smart Cities Institute (GSCI) and the Sustainability/Net-Zero Office. GSCI plays a crucial role in driving the initiative's focus on smartness, which complements the sustainability goal. This dual focus ensures the initiative is driven by:
- Efficient resource utilization
- Tech-enabled solutions and smart design
- Making good, long-term decisions for a better future
By integrating "smart" technology and design, the GSCI ensures the initiative transforms the campus into a showcase of sustainability that is well-aligned with cutting-edge, tech-enabled solutions.
The Living Lab Framework: Experimentation in Action
The concept of the Living Lab is integral to the SSC spirit. It turns the campus itself into a large-scale testing ground where everyone in the community—students, faculty, staff, and alumni—is welcome to try out their innovative ideas and solutions. We learn and grow together from these real-world experiences.
This Living Lab framework is united by three core strands:
- Research: Integrating academics to test and validate new ideas.
- Operations: Transforming campus management with smart and sustainable solutions.
- Community: Engaging all stakeholders in the development and adoption of innovations.
