HKUST Industry Engagement Day Plus - Safer, Greener, and Better

On November 22, 2024, the GREAT Smart Cities Institute, in collaboration with the HKUST Office of Knowledge Transfer and the HKUST Civil and Environmental Engineering Alumni Association, successfully hosted the Industry Engagement Day Plus - Safer, Greener, and Better! This event showcased 22 innovative HKUST start-ups and projects, presenting solutions to make our city safer, greener, and smarter.

This year's theme — Safer, Greener, and Better — was explored through three dedicated sessions on how technology can enhance urban living:

Safer: This session highlighted innovative solutions to improve public safety and resilience in our cities. Projects like DISCO, which optimises traffic signal control to improve flow and reduce delays, and AutoSafe, which leverages smart technology to modernise and automate worksite safety monitoring while enhancing efficiency, showcased their cutting-edge approaches.

Greener: The focus shifted to sustainability and environmental impact. Initiatives such as SolarArch, specializing in solar energy solutions, and Coalot Tech, known for its nano-coating technology for PV solar panels, showcased their efforts to promote green energy and smart resource management.

Better: The final session aimed at enhancing quality of life through smart city innovations. Start-ups like Hyele, provide real-time automated assessments for urban water systems. Additionally, CoolStar Innovation Technology introduced its green elastocaloric cooling and heating technology, revolutionizing refrigeration by utilizing shape memory alloys, and eliminating harmful refrigerants.

The day featured an engaging mix of exhibition booths, tech talks, and pitching sessions, attracting more than 150 attendees, including senior government officials and industry leaders.

This event marks a significant step in enhancing industry-academic collaborations and promoting technology development in Hong Kong. We look forward to future initiatives that will continue to drive progress in our smart city journey!
