Recognizing Award-Winning Kwun Tong STMS and Real-Time Adaptive Traffic Signals System (RTATSS)

Text Area

The GREAT Smart Cities Institute (GSCI) is thrilled to announce its success at the Hong Kong ICT Awards 2025 earning two prestigious accolades for our innovative work in Smart Mobility Solutions.

Bronze Award: Kwun Tong Smart Traffic Management System (STMS)

The Kwun Tong Smart Traffic Management System (STMS) secured the Bronze Award in its category. In partnership with the Hong Kong Police Force, this system is recognized as a groundbreaking integrated traffic management solution to address the complex traffic challenges within the Kwun Tong Business Area.

The STMS operates by collecting real-time data on vehicle flow, speed, and kerbside parking availability. It employs advanced algorithms to perform automated traffic analysis, which enables the provision of dynamic, data-driven management solutions. Crucially, the system is designed to optimize resource allocation swiftly and efficiently during periods of heavy congestion or incidents, relying on its constant monitoring of traffic conditions.

Certification of Merit: Real-Time Adaptive Traffic Signals System (RTATSS) in Tung Chung

GSCI was also honored with the Certification of Merit for the Real-Time Adaptive Traffic Signals System (RTATSS) implemented in Tung Chung. This project was developed in close collaboration with the Transport Department of the HKSAR Government. This initiative is a pivotal component of the official Hong Kong Smart City Blueprint 2.0, showcasing innovation in urban transport technology.

The RTATSS utilizes cutting-edge computer vision technology to monitor traffic conditions dynamically. Its innovative dual-layer processing approach (Local and Central) allows it to automatically and dynamically adjust traffic signal timings in real-time. This sophisticated adaptive mechanism is highly effective in significantly minimizing delays, enhancing the overall efficiency of urban transport in Tung Chung.

Advancing Sustainable Development

These award-winning projects are the result of close and effective collaboration with our esteemed partners, the Hong Kong Police Force and the Transport Department of the HKSAR Government. GSCI remains fully committed to advancing smart city initiatives that promote sustainable development and continuously enhance the quality of urban life across the city.
