HIGHLIGHTS AND RECAP
We are pleased to have our visiting scholar, Professor Tu from Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City, who provided an overview of the challenges in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam and current strategies to cope with the specific problems. Various research projects were presented, focusing on climate resilience solutions to address challenges such as flooding and erosion. Notable projects included non-metallic reinforced concrete solution to increase properties sustainability for coastal wave resistance works, producing water storage bags for daily life and production for residents in areas affected by saltwater intrusion and exploitation of rainwater resources of the coastal provinces of the Mekong Delta.
Additionally, the seminar outlined the framework for future sustainable development in the Mekong Delta, emphasizing economic, social, and environmental sustainability. For instance, turning the Mekong Delta into an ecologically civilized and sustainable region, imbued with river cultural identity to cope with climate change and adapt to the impacts of economic activities in the upper Mekong River.
Prof Tu also shared the Ho Chi Minh Smart City program, which leverages advanced technologies and innovative solutions to address urban challenges. From intelligent transportation systems and smart energy grids to digital waste management platforms and e-governance solutions, the program has transformed Ho Chi Minh City into a more sustainable and livable urban environment.
We are grateful to Prof Tu for sharing his expertise and knowledge and providing valuable perspectives on sustainable development and its implications for the Mekong Delta region and Ho Chi Minh City. It showcased Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City's commitment to fostering academic excellence, research advancements, and societal progress. We wish the seminar would open up opportunities for collaboration in research and development between Vietnam and HK.
