Highlights and Recap

We had an amazing time at our Friday seminar, with Mr Ricky Leung Wing-Kee, Executive Director of Enegineering and Technology of Airport Authority Hong Kong. We are very excited to share some of the new developments about the Hong Kong International Airport!

What are the major features of the transformation of HKIA?

The Airport Authority is implementing various developments to transform the “City Airport” into an “Airport City”, including 1) integration with GBA, 2) technology and innovation for services transformation, 3) SKYCITY and AsiaWorld-Expo development, 4) air cargo development, 5) runway and capacity enhancement, and 6) BCF development. The idea of Airport City has brought up “11SKIES”, developed by New World Development, which will be the city's largest retail, dining, and entertainment complex. The Airport Authority is also driving multiple plans to capture opportunities brought by e-commerce development and reinforce the airport's leading status as the world's busiest international cargo airport. The airport city strategy aims to further grow the connection with the Greater Bay Area, enhancing the airport's hub function in the region.

How will autonomous transport system facilitate traffic for passengers coming from GBA to Airport City?

To enhance productivity and operational efficiency, HKIA will implement autonomous vehicles, AI & data analytics, and 5G wireless communication. Autonomous vehicles will connect Tung Chung, Hong Kong Port and SKYCITY via the Airport City link and Airport Tung Chung link, allowing for an estimated 3000-5000 passengers per hour per direction to enter and leave the Airport City with a journey time of only 3-8 minutes. Additionally, the autonomous car parks, "Park & Visit" and "Park & Fly", supported by automated parking systems, allow passengers without a Hong Kong license car plate who arrive via the HZMB to park and retrieve their vehicles at the airport, further strengthening GBA connectivity.
